Parent-Teacher Conferences with a Twist

I have decided to conduct an action research project on Parent-Teacher Conferences Led By Students.  I think this will be a fun and beneficial way to have students become more involved in their progress of academic success for the rest of the school year.  I am excited to develop a plan where students will set goals and be able to track their progress for the remainder of the year.  I hope to continue my research into next year and be able to start in the beginning of the year and include a beginning, middle, and end of the year conference.

Conducting action research is done by educational professionals and what I have learned is that everyone's main goal is student success.  But finding many ways to achieve that success is what action research is all about.  I have also learned that no one is expecting you to start from scratch.  Use resources all around you and apply them to  your situation.  It is also acceptable to compare your campus to a campus with similar needs and demographics.

  1. I'm all for increasing student accountability. I think that having them lead the conference will help do that. Hope all goes well.

  2. I think that students should hold a little more responsibility when it comes to education. Many times decisions are made by parent and teacher without consent of the student.

  3. I think this could have far more affects than just academic success. Can you imagine the leadership skills these students could possibly learn? Or the skill of reflecting on their own actions to make a change? There are so many more ramifications that might come of this little "twist" of yours. You are going to be training our future leaders in skills they may not acquire for decades, if ever. I can't wait to see how this develops for you.

  4. I have seen in my teaching and conducting conferences with parents that you think you have this great conference and you have presented all the information to the parents and assuming all has gone well. I have always thought that when the parents go home they share what they talked about with the teacher with their children because that's what my parents always did with me. This is not the case more often than not, the students have no clue what we discussed and some don't even know if their parents showed up!

I think having the student lead the conference opens up communication between everyone and everyone is receiving the same information. When the students are held accountable for presenting their academic progress they will usually put more effort into their work.

The main goal here is to create more communication between school and home through the student. Also to build leadership skills with the students to use beyond the classroom.

Thanks for the responses and support with my action research!!
